What Are Biodegradable Labels Made Of?

Compostable labels are created from matt-white, uncoated, wood-free printing paper which is made from 95% sugarcane fibres and 5% hemp and linen. These labels are ideal for food products and packaging as they contain no toxic or harmful chemicals.

What Is Biodegradable Packaging?

Biodegradable packaging involves using plant-based materials that are sustainable and eco-friendly. Our biodegradable labels are made from bagasse which is a sugarcane fibre waste product created by sugar refineries across the world. Bagasse is substantially more eco-friendly than wood-pulp paper as it degrades considerably faster whilst returning nutrients to the soil. Sugarcane reproduces in cycles of less than one-year whilst trees for paper normally take between 7-10 years to reach full maturity. Bagasse requires a lot less energy to produce as the waste product has already been harvested and collected as part of the sugar industry process. As fewer steps are needed, sugarcane is less polluting than paper labels and is available as an agricultural waste product.

Are Paper Labels Biodegradable?

Paper labels are recyclable apart from metallic paper labels that usually come in gold and silver. Polythene labels, plastic labels with a metallic layer, and PVC labels are also non-recyclable. By switching to biodegradable labels made from bagasse you protect the natural world, lower carbon emissions and preserve valuable ecosystems.

How Long Do Biodegradable Labels Last?

Biodegradable labels made from bagasse cane fibres provide a shelf life of 2 years. Whilst these labels are suitable for a variety of products, they are especially useful for food packaging as they are resistant to grease, oil, and fat.
Materials & Application

Why Buy Biodegradable Labels From Us?

Our labels are created from a matt-white, uncoated, wood-free printing paper which is made from 95% sugarcane fibres and 5% hemp and linen. We understand that in our current climate, companies want to make more environmentally friendly choices across every part of their company, whether it’s simply turning the lights off, saving water, or sending out packages that are shipped using environmentally friendly materials.

What’s more, our compostable labels are purposefully designed with both wine labelling and food packaging in mind, so our customers can rest assured that the entire packaging is biodegradable. If the label were to come into contact with dry foodstuff, this is of no concern due to the material it is made from. This gives you a plethora of options to choose from when using our biodegradable labels for your businesses' needs.

How Biodegradable Labels Are Printed

Our biodegradable labels are printed using conventional techniques like most of the other labels in our range. Because of the open and textured nature of the face material, the optimum results come from printing techniques where maximum conformability of the printing plate is produced, for example where flexo and offset are concerned.
Label Usage

What Uses Do Biodegradable Labels Have?

These eco-friendly labels are ideal for businesses or individuals looking for labels that are kinder to the environment. You can use our biodegradable labels for a number of purposes, including:

Food Products

As stated previously, these eco-friendly labels are perfect for food products, as they are able to come into contact with foodstuff without contaminating it. This is due to the eco-friendly materials the labels are made from, ensuring they aren’t toxic for humans. Whether you’re a company looking to provide more sustainable, environmentally friendly single-use packaging, or a burgeoning new food company, our biodegradable labels should work for any application.

Biodegradable Packaging

These labels are perfect for companies who are transitioning to more biodegradable packaging. Often companies can be dissuaded from using this type of product as it can be exponentially more expensive than regular labels due to the fact they’re made to order, but our biodegradable labels are now permanently in stock, reducing the overall cost.

Our biodegradable labels could be part of a wider move for your company to spread less of a footprint when selling your products, helping your clients to feel better about the purchasing choices they make.

If you’re trying to become a b-corp company, this could be a step towards this accreditation. Using biodegradable labels and eco-friendly products show you are making a concerted effort to produce as low a footprint as possible and means there is less chance of your company spreading a high amount of waste.

This is something that can be reviewed when you are providing evidence for your submission but should be something that is brought up.

Keeping in Accordance with FDA Regulations

In accordance with FDA regulations, the adhesive used on our labels is also considered safe to come into direct contact with food or can be separated by a functional barrier. Because our labels are entirely biodegradable this means they are perfect for manufacturers looking to use only recyclable materials in their products.

To have this claim, it’s important to follow the regulations exactly, as using many different types of materials in packaging can affect the recycling plant’s ability to process it. Rest assured, everything has been done to ensure these labels are safe, biodegradable and in line with all relevant regulations.
